ABOUT DR. JIM MAXWELL
Born at St. Mary’s Hospital, Dr. Jim Maxwell is a proud native son of Monroe County who has practiced neurosurgery in Rochester since 1982. Born in the Village of Pittsford and growing up with three siblings in East Rochester, Dr. Maxwell learned the value of a hard day’s work at a young age – both from his parents and from his work as a lifeguard, switchboard operator, and groundskeeper.
After he graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School, Dr. Jim Maxwell earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his medical degree from Columbia University. Dr. Maxwell received a fellowship in neuropathology at Queen Square Hospital (London, England) in 1980 and completed his neurosurgery residency in 1981. In 1982, Dr. Maxwell returned to Rochester to begin his neurosurgical career.
Dr. Jim Maxwell has served as Chief of Neurosurgery at Rochester General Hospital since 1998. Throughout his career, Dr. Maxwell served as a surgical staff member at a number of Rochester-area hospitals, including: Rochester General, St. Mary’s, Unity, Genesee, F.F. Thompson, Lakeside, and Strong Memorial. In addition to his surgical duties, Dr. Maxwell trains senior neurosurgical residents from Strong Memorial Hospital and is also a faculty member in the University of Rochester’s Department of Neurosurgery. Since 1982, Dr. Jim Maxwell has performed over 7,000 surgeries and roughly 20,000 patient consultations.
In 1978, Dr. Maxwell married Janice Kelly and together they raised three children, Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Peter. In 2015, Janice lost her long battle with breast cancer. Dr. Maxwell is the proud grandfather to four: Jack, Kelly, Lucy, and Maxwell.
In addition to raising his family and caring for his many patients, Dr. Maxwell is very involved in the medical community, serving for a time as a trustee of St. Mary’s Hospital and Unity Hospital. He is most proud of his contributions to the education of young women by raising nearly $9 million to support Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women. For his efforts, he was honored with the Catherine McAuley Award. He also received the Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award from his alma mater, McQuaid Jesuit High School.
As the Representative for New York’s 25th Congressional District, Dr. Jim Maxwell promises to use the talents and skills he honed as a doctor to restore integrity in Washington, fight to fix our broken federal government, and get the results Monroe County deserves.
